Speak in potential

Speak in potential is an action involving writing on skin. The text that is reproduced is part of a conversation about the conditional as a verbal form of suggestion, hypothesis or probability. During the action, the body is used as a support on which the words are drawn, and the adaptation to the surface of the body results in a reorganisation of the phrases. The fold/body forces the ink to negotiate a surface very unlike the organisation of a page and its stipulated lines. The skin available for writing on is a living topography and one that conditions its visibility.
Itziar Okariz works in the realm of action and performance. Her oeuvre - consisting of vocal performances, actions, videos, installations and writings - examines the links between architecture, territory, the body, ritual, sexuality and semiotics, and is very often associated with feminist practices, punk rock and queer critique of normative gender constructs. In recent years, Okariz's practice has been linked to the forms of transmission and pedagogies of art. She has participated in numerous international exhibitions, among them Dream Time, UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing; Ho paura che Roma sia esistita!, MAXXI Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo, Rome (2024); Diario de Sueños, Museo Macba, Buenos Aires (2023); 23rd Paiz Art Biennial, Guatemala City (2023); Processi 150, Real Academia de España, Rome (2023); Playbill, Torpedo Theater, Amsterdam (2022); Urak Dakar, Bizkaia Aretoa, Bilbao (2022); Rodeo, Musac, León (2022); Unquiet Objects, Disjecta, Portland; La Noche de las Ideas, Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2021), Moving Words, Rimi Scenekunst, Stavanger, Norway (2021); and Bodies of Water, 13th Shanghai Biennale, (2020). Okariz, together with Sergio Prego, represented Spain at the 58th Venice Biennale (2019).
