The Espai 13 season has been entrusted to the independent curator Carolina Jiménez, who was commissioned to explore, based on newly produced projects by four artists, the relationship between their practices and their environments, either those they have experienced in various formative stages or those they have adopted for professional or personal reasons. Jiménez has chosen Josu Bilbao (1978), Paula García-Masedo (1984), Ludovica Carbotta (1982) and Marwa Arsanios (1978).
Through these artists, Jiménez begins reflecting on the relationship between creation and place, proposing an investigation of art into concepts such as 'home', 'community', 'presence' and 'belonging'. What separates here from there? Who has the right to be part of a community? When can we say that we truly belong to a place? What are the implications of saying 'we'? How can a community be built without a place? How can we practice forms of solidarity and coexistence without falling into extractivist, appropriationist approaches or speaking on behalf of others? These questions are also motion vectors in the season.
The proposals from these four artists will test different ways of relating to a place. Based on what the season dubs 'sensible militancy' or 'militant sensibility, the exhibition proposals will be built around both poetic and political gestures, protocols, methodologies and connections. Far from collapsing in a geopolitical context of brutality and violence, these will seek to weave ways of doing and living together, thereby broadening the possibility of encountering other struggles that are not based on terms of equivalence.
