Weiyan Low is a Malaysian visual anthropologist interested in the entanglements of technology and everyday materialism. While on fieldwork, Low has collaborated with Rumah Kosong, a local film collective, to produce a documentary film on The Kelantan Match Factory. Established in 1933 and staffed mostly by women, it is the last functioning matchmaker in the country. The memories Low gathered from the staff describe a history of production decline and aging, both mechanical and human, that are in contrast and consonance with caring maintenance and with the comfort workers feel towards their labour. The humble match, a utilitarian object that evokes past customs and is used less and less, has become a symbol of resistance in the face of obsolescence.
