The Wilson Exercises is a framework in which the artists Anna Craycroft and Marc Vives and the curatorial office Rivet have exchanged materials and research since fall 2012. It is a method and process that evades the evaluative and interrupts clear distinctions between doing, making, and showing. In Cycling Mode is the second iteration of The Wilson Exercises in exhibition format and was preceded by a residency at the Rogaland Kunstsenter in Norway, in summer 2014 and an exhibition, The End of Summer, at REDCAT in Los Angeles in winter 2014. The works on view are continuations of The End of Summer.
The Wilson Exercises is about staying fit while working together and still following individual interest. It is a way of paying close attention to process while developing a multifaceted project--comprising personal conversations, a summer school, conference calls, two exhibitions, and one publication-- between two artists and a curatorial duo.
The works on display at Epai 13 are translations of what happens when exhibition experiences are brought back into the individual studio and are confronted anew with personal working methods and habits. Throughout, the curators have put their analytical gaze on hold in favor of responses in an associative and fictional voice that engages with aspects of the artists' material. The floor texts in this exhibition are fragments culled from that archive.
The Wilson Exercises is also accompanied by a publication Manual: The Wilson Exercises, a limited number of which is on sale in the museum bookshop.
