«El cuadro» de La Calleja [La Calleja’s «Fenced Square»] focuses on the ideological construction of the spiritual and the divine, specially, that evidenced during the second half of the 20th century at the sightings of the Virgin Mary in San Sebastian de Garabandal, Cantabria. Julia Montilla analyzes the visual and written recordings that were generated around those apparitions, establishing, that way, a research that cuts across questions of gender, tradition and popular imagery.
The «El cuadro» [The Fenced Square] in La Calleja refers to the narrow alley where a group of girls supposedly watched in ecstasy a number of divine sightings. As a point of departure, by taking that theatrical setting to Espai 13, the artist presents her inquiries into the exploitation of faith, constructing an exhibit reminiscent of certain practices of historiography.
