Club 49 was an association of prominent members of the industrial and professional bourgeoisie of Barcelona, including intellectuals, artists, writers, architects and photographers. It was key to reconstructing and promoting the Catalan artistic and cultural scene during the dictatorship in the 1950s and 1960s. The name of the club came from the first place where they met, which provided them with legal cover: the musical association Hot Club. Sala Gaspar became the central hub of the group in 1952.
The many activities organised included talks, concerts, poetry recitals, a hybrid stage piece by John Cage and Merce Cunningham, the first Miró anthology exhibition at the Galeries Laietanes, the first Dau al Set exhibition, Japanese art shows and the international art show Otro arte (Another Art), where visitors could see works by Pollock, Fautrier, Wols, De Kooning and Tobey alongside others by Tàpies, Tharrats and El Paso.
The conversation is part of the cycle 'Tàpies. Art and Territory' promoted by the Xarxa de Museus d'Art de Catalunya (XMAC) to commemorate Tàpies Year. The programme is aimed at honouring a crucial figure for Catalan culture with an international career and at encouraging new perspectives and contributions connecting this legacy with the collections and with the programming of the museum facilities participating in the cycle.
Held between art and academic specialists, the conversations touch on the programming, collection and ideology of each museum. These conversations offer a multifaceted view of Tàpies' work, as well as its development and the path it has taken. During the first half of 2025, the XMAC will organise the thoughts and ideas shared by the 26 guest speakers in a publication.
This activity is part of the celebration of Any Tàpies, in which you can also visit the work Painting With Wall Coat Rack by Antoni Tàpies in the rooms of the Miró Collection.
