Symposium organised by the Càtedra Miró (Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona/Universitat Oberta de Catalunya) and the New York University in Madrid, with the support of the Graduate Research Initiative (NYU) and the collaboration of the Obra Social "la Caixa".
Coordinated by Robert Lubar Messeri, Director of the New York University Madrid, of the Càtedra Miró and of the International Miró Research Group.
Miró and Twentieth-Century Sculpture aims to place Joan Miró's work within the tradition of modern sculpture, and to study it in dialogue with the work of other artists such as Julio González, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Hans Arp, Isamu Noguchi, Alberto Giacometti, Henry Moore and David Smith.
The symposium does not seek to analyse direct influences but to reintegrate Miró's practice into the history of modern sculpture, from which it has largely been marginalised.
