A roundtable discussion between Céline Sciamma and Carla Simón, two of the most important voices on today's European film scene. They will address questions related to their narrative methodologies and interests as part of a conversation moderated by the artist and researcher blanca arias.
Céline Sciamma (Pontoise, Val-d'Oise, 1980)
Born in the suburbs of Paris, she began studying screenwriting at the La Femis film school after graduating in French literature. Her first feature film, Naissance des pieuvres (Water Lilies, 2007), was selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival and won the Louis Delluc Award for Best First Film. Her second feature, Tomboy (2011), premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlin Festival, and Bande de filles (Girlhood) opened the Cannes Directors' Fortnight in 2014. The latter presented Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (Portrait of a Lady on Fire) with the award for Best Screenplay, while Petite maman won the Audience Award at Berlin and San Sebastián.
Carla Simón (1986, Les Planes d'Hostoles)
She belongs to an extended family full of stories that provide the source of her inspiration as a writer and director. She graduated in Audiovisual Communication from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 2009 and later continued her training at the London Film School under a "la Caixa" Foundation fellowship. In 2017, the Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences selected her first feature film, Estiu 1993 (Summer 1993, 2017), to represent Spain at the Oscars, a film with which she won the award for Best First Film at the Berlinale. She also won the Golden Bear at this event in 2022 for Alcarràs (2022) and was a finalist for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
blanca arias (Barcelona, 1998)
She is an artist and researcher with a Degree in Art History (University of Barcelona) and a Master in Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Thought (Pompeu Fabra University), with a dissertation entitled Hacia una somateca bollo: un análisis de Portrait de la jeune fille en feu de Céline Sciamma (Towards a dyke somatheque: an analysis of Céline Sciamma's Portrait de la jeune fille en feu). She is currently a PhD student in Society and Culture (University of Barcelona), completing a thesis that is provisionally entitled Sujetos lesbianos, cuerpos mitológicos (Lesbian subjects, mythological bodies), stemming from her desire to examine lesbian subjectivity and experience and their relationship with mythological images.
