In 1928, Joan Miró received his first commission to illustrate a book, Il était une petite pie. 7 chansons et 3 chansons pour Hyacinthe, a collection of poems with a monorhyme scheme conceived in the manner of children's songs, written by Lise Hirtz.
'Let my work be like a poem set to music by a painter.'
Miró, who received the commission via André Breton and Paul Eluard, illustrated the poems with eight pochoirs, while Georges Auric, to whom the book is dedicated, set five to music. Thanks to this collaborative experience, Miró went beyond the boundaries of painting and came directly into contact with poetry, experimenting with the image and the word.
